“DOR” -
THE JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL

Each person has a choice - to live with what he is given or to fly unto freedom!!

We are born to fly, to evolve, to reach higher planes. And for this, we have to take our life in our own hands. We all live for food, shelter and clothing. But, is this all that we are born for? Isn’t there something much higher in life?

How do we achieve higher aims in life? By exercising the right choice. We are sunk into problems, stagnated, and complaining because we choose all this.  But each one of us has a choice!

How do we decide our right choice? Just listen to the heart!

Listen to the inner voice. And let the higher self guide you. Keep away the norms of society. Society is dominated by the people who are into power and who exploit those who are not.

As in the movie, Dor, by Nagesh Kukunoor,  if a woman’s husband dies, she may have to live her life for her in-laws, get exploited by them and bury the voice of her heart. She may exercise this choice, because of the fear of the unknown world outside. This fear makes her live to please others. But, then, the choice of moving to the world outside (though unknown) is always there. It is difficult, but it exists.

Achieving freedom is not an easy job. It is a struggle, but being aware that the path to freedom exists, is important. This awareness helps us to create opportunity for ourselves.

Only a free person can give a hand to others, and uplift them.

Dor, made by Kukunoor, in a beautiful style has portrayed freedom needed by women. A rare movie, dominated by women folk and an honest attempt made to show how one woman can either help the other one free herself, or ruin her.

“Apne suhaag ka ghamand mat kar, tu kabhi bhi is taraf ho sakti hai” A powerful statement by Mira’s Grandmother-in-law, who is also a widow, and followed by the powerful expressions of the melting Mira’s mother in law, who gives in to the choice made by Mira.

Mira Ayesha Takia, is a very sweet looking and simple girl, without any make up. She is fit for a Rajasthani young bride followed by a widow’s role. She has been portrayed as a soft but powerful woman. Despite the deep hurt that she is carrying of the loss of her husband, she craves to dance, watch movies, sing and eat sweets. And she would love to spend the birth anniversary of her husband, not by crying, but by re-living these joys she shared with him. Till she meets Zeenat, Gul Panag, she has not even realized that she has any wishes or feelings of her own. She has stopped herself from enjoying anything in life. She has long back buried the voice of her heart.

But, she has the will to transform, which makes her take the opportunity Zeenat offeres her.

The life of Zeenat’s husband is in her hands. If she forgives him for killing her husband, he can be relieved from his death punishment. She is uncomfortable with this responsibility. Now she is holding the strings of someone else’s life.

It is very easy to give your own strings in the hands of others. But now, she realizes, how difficult it is to hold the strings of others and yourself, too. It is because of this discomfort of holding our own strings that we give them in the hands of others.

Zeenat, is a strong, self made woman, having immense faith in herself. She believes she can achieve anything in life. She is not a loser. She is a struggler. And her mind power shows her the way. She is genuine at heart, and she has faith in herself. No task is impossible for her. She knows she is above everyone, like the Jonathan Livingston Seagull. And therefore she can help others come up in life. Yet she learns the softness of Mira.

She preaches Mira to live for herself and to make a choice. A choice to live her life in her own way and not be bound by the norms of society, which would only exploit her.

Shreyas Talpade is portrayed as a “bahurupiya.” He meets people with the various dresses he wears, but he genuinely loves others. And this is what makes him happy all the time. His love for Zeenat is genuine and unconditional. His love for himself made him feel the life of a widow, who he feels is….a human being transformed to a living dead.

“Dadima” (the grandmother in law, who is a widow herself), confesses to Mira about her jealousy towards Mira as a bride. But then, she encourages Mira to listen to her heart when it is time for Mira to forgive the killer of her husband. Mira feels she is just a human being and not a Messiah, and wishes to destroy the killer of her husband. Dadima teaches her to take guidance from her heart during such dilemma. Dadima is just washing her karma’s by helping Mira.

Mira learns from Zeenat that she has a right to live life the way she wants. And she, too, needs to fly higher than where she is!!!

An excellent movie. It sets our mind thinking thus……

Am I living for myself, or am I pleasing others and suppressing myself?

Is this the best of the situation for me to live in, or is there a better choice?

 Do other paths exist?

Is my mind full of reasoning and fears instigated by the powerful people, since ages? Am I acting out of conditioning or my heart?

At least now, do I need to listen to my inner voice and fly higher??!!
